By the time the specialty coffee movement reaches its fiftieth anniversary, enthusiasts will have been exploring the nuances of single-origin beans for half a century. Roasters will have been experimenting with fermentation techniques, and baristas will have been perfecting latte art to a level of precision that rivals classical sculpture. The beverage that fuels morning routines across the globe will have been transformed from a commodity into an artisanal experience.

My friend Marco, who will have been importing beans from Ethiopian cooperatives for twelve years by next spring, explains that climate change threatens the entire industry. Farmers will have been adapting to shifting weather patterns for decades, but rising temperatures are pushing cultivation to higher altitudes. By 2050, scientists estimate that suitable land for Arabica coffee will have been shrinking by fifty percent for generations.

The economic implications are profound. Small-scale producers who have been cultivating heirloom varieties for generations face extinction alongside their crops. Meanwhile, consumers in wealthy nations will have been paying premium prices for exotic beans without understanding the supply chain that delivers them. The disparity between the labour that produces coffee and the profit it generates has been a source of tension since colonial times.

Marco insists that direct trade relationships are the only ethical path forward. By the time his children inherit the business, he hopes they will have been building partnerships with growers for so long that trust has become the currency of exchange. He approaches this work with the whole nine yards of dedication, visiting farms personally and negotiating prices that allow dignified living standards.
