The printing press, the steam engine, and the internet are frequently cited as humanity’s most transformative inventions. Yet we rarely consider how many alternative technologies were never developed because these dominant ones had their potential realised first. The internal combustion engine, for example, had its design refined and mass-produced so quickly that electric vehicles were marginalised for a century.

My grandfather, who grew up before television existed, often describes how his village had its first radio installed in the town hall. The entire community would gather to have the news broadcast to them collectively. He had his imagination captured by voices from distant cities, and his worldview expanded in ways that no book alone could have achieved. The technology had its limitations, of course, but it had ordinary people connected to global events in unprecedented ways.

Historians now ask what might have happened if the telegram had been developed before the postal service had its network established. Would written correspondence have evolved differently? Would literature have taken another form? These counterfactuals are impossible to resolve, but they remind us that technological progress is never inevitable. It is shaped by countless decisions, accidents, and political choices.

I recently had my perspective altered by a documentary about innovations that failed. The creators had their careers destroyed by bad timing or insufficient funding, yet their ideas were eventually resurrected by others decades later. It made me wonder how many brilliant minds are currently being overlooked because the prevailing system has their contributions dismissed before they can mature.
